the perks and (Unperks?) of a barista
Perks:
1. one pound of coffee free per week!!(yey for me!!:) )
2. free coffee during my shift (i save about $8 a day for 2 frappuccinos!!cool)
3. 30% off on drinks when you're not on shift
4. meeting new people (some customers are really funny actually-super fun to talk to!!and they're so encouraging pa!during my first day at the register, i kept screwing up orders-mga 5 lang that day- and i just kept making pacute by saying "sorry, it's my first day", so they become all nice and all, and would encourage me pa..they even gave tips!!haha!!)plus there was this cute guy who was like "so, you're new huh?doesn't look like it!!"haha!!too bad i don't remember his face!!ahhaha
5. working with awesome people(i love the people i work with!!they're all so nice and helpful and very funny!!!they're all so pasaway!ahlavit)
6. free pizza!!(haha!!since the starbucks i work at is beside domino's pizza, we give them free drinks in exchange of free pizza!!How cool is that?haha)
7. knowing how to make the drinks!!(mind you, i can make frappuccinos na-as in the drink mismo and the base pa)well, i can just make the fraps and the tazo iced tea and the caramel macchiatto..the others, i have yet to learn...
8. $8 an hour beybeh!!(but they still have to take out the tax...boohoo, so i don't know how much pa!)
9. paid vacations--after 3 months, i get one day off from october ata to april na bayad ng starbucks...cool diba?
did i mention free coffee?:)
disperks (shyet, i have my own language na!!)
1. standing for the whole shift (which i don't actually mind since there are soo much people na you don't know the time...i get 10 minute breaks but i take less time because i get bored sitting down..haha)i only notice na i've stood up the whole time when my legs begin to hurt at night
2. insomnia...yep, i get too much caffeine!!like right now, it's 12:20 at night na but i'm still super hyper because today, i had a workshop where we had to taste different types of starbucks coffee, i think i've tasted 7 kinds kanina...eh i'm a bold coffee type of person, so i liked the sadani (i think that's what you call it)the sumatra coffee tastes really funky, i don't know why people like it..tastes like dirt-not that i've tried it!!haha!!in addition, i got pa a caramel light frappuccino and a strawberries and cream frap(sorry na, i was hungry kasi eh, we had a lecture na 4 hours, so i got the crf (caramel frap) at the start and the stcf during the break..i got din a banana loaf since i was hungry..haha!!shyet!!i'm really gonna gain weight here!!haha!!i'm so hyper talaga!!It's not even funny!!
3. calling orders!!this is the one i need to get used to pa naman...i'm having a hard time distinguishing saying order and order cold...kasi they told me to say"order cold for cold drinks--mga frap, etc and say "order" for the hot drinks..so sometimes, i say"order cold" for an iced coffee and they'd correct me..basta my point is i have yet to distinguish which iced coffee is order cold or just order..plus, sometimes, people say their orders too fast or too long na i just zone out!!haha!!it's not like kasi in manila wherein people just order their fraps or their iced mocha or something..as in here, they have pa a dupio no foam no whip whatever espresso bladiblah na when i call it, i say "order" and then i just let the customer repeat her/his order to the other barista, tapos she/he will guide me nalang on the register...haha!!it was so bad talaga my first day on the register..as in i zoned out on this girl who was talking so fast tapos she handed me pa a splenda...i was thinking "pongalangala!!what am i supposed to do)..buti talaga, the customers and the people i work with are really nice and patient with me...my supervisor nga yesterday said that i was doing fine with the register, so i was happy about that!!and the assistant manager told me that it took her like 2 months to get the register, so no worries for me...gosh buti nalang..and the others told me na it will get better..so i hope it will talaga!!haha
4. getting coffee spilled on your clothes...i know that's part of the job...i mean the occassional spritz of coffee or water is fine...but seriously...this afternoon,as i said, we had a coffee tasting session..being the clumsy person that i am (parang i got gulat ata, i don't remember), i spilled my coffee on my pants..mind you i was wearing khaki pa naman...and i just bought it last saturday(shyet)..we have a dress code eh:black or khaki/tan pants, and a black/white polo shirt...so today i decided to wear my khaki pants...wrong decision...being the smart as that i am naman, i didn't wet the stain(kakahiya naman kasi...would you really wet your pants in starbucks).pero one of the guys i was with naman (he was a shift supervisor in seattles best before he moved to starbucks) said na water can make it go away...so i only tried to remove the stain when i got home...haha...smart butt!!sana talaga it goes away!!gosh!!!
5. my morning shifts...yeck!!!this friday, my shift is from 7-11 am, next wednesday 7-12, and thursday 6:30-12...buti nalang my monday and friday next week shifts are during the afternoon...not that i'm complaining...i mean, it's okay naman for me to have morning shifts, it's just that i'm insomniac na so i have to find a way to sleep early diba?i mean at least i have a good reason to sleep early...and at least i can get my caramel macchiatto in the morning...the iced one tastes like shit talaga!!I hate iced caramel macchiatto!!eww!!!eh i can't have the hot one in the afternoon because summer weather na here!!haha:)
ahh!!!i'm still hyper!!waaaaah!!!I need to sleep real bad!!!!and oh yeah, i still get bulol and barok over some words so don't even think that i'm slang na!!!hahaha
